Choose your route home before you choose your final venue. A little planning makes it easier to enjoy the night without leaving your last decision to a low phone battery or an unfamiliar street.
Does Melbourne have late-night public transport?
Yes. Transport Victoria describes weekend Night Network services covering metropolitan trains, trams and buses, plus certain regional coaches. That does not mean every route or stop runs all night. Use its official late-night transport guide for the journey planner, departure information and current network maps.
Plan the actual trip, not just the station
Enter your accommodation as the destination and the time you expect to leave. Check the walking section at both ends, transfers and the next available departure. A convenient train can still leave you with a difficult final walk. If you are staying outside central Melbourne, compare the whole journey before committing to a late finish.
Use this before-you-leave checklist
- Save your accommodation address and a meeting point your friends can recognise.
- Check the journey for the correct night and date, especially after midnight.
- Check service changes again before leaving the venue.
- Have a charged phone, a backup battery if needed and a way to pay for your trip.
- Agree whether the group is travelling together or splitting up.
- Keep enough money aside for a backup ride rather than spending the transport budget.
Do not assume the next stop is running normally
Late-night services can have different routes or frequencies from daytime travel. Use current departure information rather than a saved screenshot from a previous weekend. Transport Victoria’s guide links to timetables, maps and myki information; consult those before travelling instead of relying on a fixed fare or timetable quoted in a blog.
Have a clear pickup plan
If you choose a taxi or rideshare, pick a legal, accessible pickup location that is easy to describe. Stay together while the group sorts out cars, check you are entering the booked vehicle, and let someone know if you change plans. Do not pressure a friend to keep going when they want to leave.
What if someone feels unsafe?
Ask venue staff for help rather than walking off alone to solve a problem. For public-transport guidance, use Victoria Police’s transport-safety advice. In an emergency, call 000.
Finishing a crawl does not require staying out
Your preferred finale might be dancing, food or heading home. Set that expectation with your crew early. A hosted experience can reduce planning between stops, but guests still need to arrange their own journey home unless transport is explicitly included in the event.
